Frank

Frank Amestoy is dead. He died of a heart attack at the age of 62 yesterday while working on his house.

I have been to Frank Amestoy’s Bar numerous times. It is 1/2 mile from my house. I take my out-of-town friends there. One of my classmates had known Frank her entire life. She alerted me to his passing in an email this morning.

The Bakersfield Californian says that Frank was known for his “colorful language” and “risque humor.” This is very true. In Frank’s bar, he has an old-fashioned towel dispenser in the men’s bathroom. The kind that actually has a fabric towel that goes around in a loop inside the dispenser itself. One time, I was washing my hands when Frank came storming in. He was irate at how often he was having to change the towel in the dispenser. Numerous uses of the C-S word. If I remember correctly, he pondered whether guys could avoid pissing on their hands, among other things.

I took my army buddy Hoat to Amestoy’s several times. One time, Hoat put a buck into the jukebox and picked some songs - right before last call. The balls on this guy - Hoat went up to Frank and asked for his dollar back. Frank gave him shit and made fun of him for the rest of the night.

Frank loved it when my nursing class would meet up at his bar, and it wasn’t because of my scruffy ass. The influx of good-looking women was good for his business. He was always sure to let them know too.

The above picture is of my classmate Sherrie and Frank, about a year ago. Thanks for the fun times Frank. We’ll miss you.

[…] Bakosphere is a blog that I believe is run in conjunction with The Bakersfield Californian. At least, that is how I first discovered it. Right after Frank Amestoy died, I went to the Californian to read more about what happened. I found the link to Bakosphere off of their front page and thereafter entered into the Bakersfield blogosphere. That is how I found the blogs of Bake Town, Dusty, and Black Dog (all in Big Time Links). […]

[…] I took him over to Amestoy’s. He has been there a handful of times, but this was after the visit where he asked Frank III for his dollar back. Anyway, the place had quite a few people on this Friday night. […]
