Army

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

I went out of town to Monterey this last weekend because I was worried about sitting around my house all weekend with nothing to do.

I went to an informal BBQ with about ten Joes, including some of their wives. It reminded me of the good ol’ days back in the army, instead this time I was the old fogey and they were the brash, cocky kids.

One guy came with his wife. Both were nice people, and this was the first time I had met them. He wanted to elicit my advice on separating from the service.

It was actually a funny conversation, as he admitted to “wanting a job that wasn’t that hard, that paid a lot, and was in an air-conditioned office.” He also wanted to help his old lady to step up from veterinary technician and become a DVM. He wanted to go into “International Relations’ because of his language background, but also admitted to liking to “blow things up.”

This guy worried that he wouldn’t have enough money to make this all happen. Let’s be honest; it’s a tall order. I suggested he go to a state school. He thought that he should go to a more prestigious sounding school because employers look at that.

Anyway, I ran into a wall with my advice giving because all of his desires would take about twenty years to accomplish. He wasn’t very satisfied with my consultation.
